I've written a quick and dirty Linux app to do network traffic statistics based on application classification of TCP connections. It uses the protocol definitions from the l7-filter project and libnids. Feel free to download l7traf and give it a try. It's also my first stab at using KDevelop as an IDE, which hasn't turned out too badly.
